Personalised Learning and Support

Personalised Learning at ESS

At Evelyn Scott School, we recognise that education is evolving and with that evolution come questions and discussions. Let's explore some common questions about personalised learning and clarify how it works for our learners!

  1. Myth: Personalised learning is easier and less challenging than traditional schooling.

Reality: Personalised learning isn’t about making things easier; it’s about making learning more meaningful and engaging.

At ESS, we follow the Australian Curriculum just like all ACT public schools. Our approach blends inquiry-based learning, learner-led projects, and explicit teaching. Instead of memorising facts just for a test, learners develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills—things they’ll actually use in the real world!

Yes, it’s different from the “sit and listen” approach many parents experienced, but research shows that learners retain information better and understand it more deeply when they learn this way. At first, some learners take time to adjust, but once they get the hang of it, they often find learning more rewarding and enjoyable.

  2. Myth: Personalised learning means a watered-down curriculum.

Reality: Every learner at ESS is taught the full Australian Curriculum.

All ACT public schools follow the same national standards, and our teachers ensure learners meet or exceed achievement benchmarks. The difference is that, instead of learning subjects in isolation, learners explore real-world topics that combine different subjects—just like life outside of school!

For example, instead of doing separate lessons in English, Science, and Technology, learners might work on a project that involves researching environmental issues (Science), writing persuasive arguments (English), and using technology to present their findings. This interdisciplinary approach makes learning more connected and meaningful.

Embedded in all learning experiences, general capabilities like critical thinking, collaboration, and digital literacy prepare learners for the future.

When specific skills don’t naturally fit into a project, we create targeted learning sessions to cover them, ensuring no key learning areas are missed. Masterclasses are a key component of our personalised learning model, providing the explicit teaching learners need to build essential foundation skills and subject knowledge.

In this way, Masterclasses act as a cornerstone of our project based learning model — providing the explicit, structured learning that empowers learners to confidently apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

  3. Myth: Inquiry-based learning is only for younger learners.

Reality: Inquiry-based learning is valuable for learners of all ages.

At ESS, we gradually build independence in learning. Younger learners begin with play-based and inquiry learning, while older learners transition into personalised and project-based learning in our Senior Campus. By the time they graduate, they have strong skills in research, collaboration, and problem-solving—skills that universities and employers look for.

Studies show that learners who experience personalised learning are better prepared for further study and work because they can think for themselves, manage their time, and tackle challenges with confidence.

  4. Myth: Traditional schooling is more rigorous and academically demanding.

Reality: Project-based learning is just as rigorous—if not more so—because it challenges learners to think deeply and apply their learning in real-world situations.

Instead of just memorising facts, learners learn how to analyse information, solve complex problems, and adapt to new situations. This makes them more resilient and better prepared for higher education and the workforce.

ACT public schools, including ESS, are known for their innovative approaches and commitment to high-quality education. Our learners don’t just learn content—they develop essential skills like communication, collaboration, and critical thinking that will serve them well in any career path.

  5. Myth: There are no tests, no homework, and no core subjects.

Reality: While learning may look different, essential subjects like English, Maths, and Science are still taught, and assessments still happen. At ESS we report on learner achievement each semester in the same way that all other ACT public schools do.

Standardised tests, like NAPLAN, are still part of schooling. However, we also assess learners in ways that reflect real-life skills, such as presentations, projects, and self-reflection. These assessments give teachers a more complete picture of what learners really understand.

Homework at ESS isn’t about busy work—it’s about reinforcing learning. Learners may need to research, read, or reflect on their work at home. We also encourage daily reading for pleasure, which builds literacy skills and fosters a love for learning.

We know that project-based learning may be different from what many parents experienced in school, but the goal remains the same: to provide the best education possible. By making learning engaging, meaningful, and relevant to the real world, we are preparing learners for success in further education, careers, and life.
