Mura Gadi: Pathways for Learning
"Mura Gadi" means "searching pathways" in Ngunnawal language, and that’s exactly what our Mura Gadi groups are all about! These groups serve as a learner’s home base, providing structure, personalised guidance and a strong sense of belonging.
- Each learner has one Mura Gadi teacher for English, Maths and HASS. This teacher stays with their Mura Gadi group for the year, and often beyond, supporting both academic growth and social and emotional learning.
- Learners spend six sessions per week in Mura Gadi groups, working on Masterclasses, personal projects and global concepts.
- Teachers act as mentors, guiding learners through challenges and celebrating their successes.
- Mura Gadi replaces traditional pastoral care, ensuring wellbeing is woven into the learning experience.
Having one teacher across key subjects means learners are supported by someone who knows them deeply and understands their needs. This consistency builds trust, helps teachers respond quickly to each learner, and creates a steadier, more nurturing school experience.
Research shows that when teachers stay with the same group of learners over time, students feel more secure, perform better academically, and show stronger social and emotional growth. This approach, sometimes called “looping,” helps teachers build the deep knowledge and relationships that make a real difference in learning
(KQED, Staying With the Same Teacher the Following Year Benefits Students, Research Says, 2021).
Learners also have different specialist teachers for movement, science, electives and languages. This means they benefit from both the stability of one core teacher and the expertise of multiple teachers across a range of subjects.
